Abstract:

Small interfering RNA (siRNA) and microRNA (miRNA) are two small RNA molecules that have claimed the attention of the molecular research world. siRNA have shifted from an novel method to manipulate gene expression to a standard molecular research tool, like Northern blots or PCR. miRNA molecules have disease, development and other researchers all over the world discovering biomarkers and previously unknown regulators of their genes of interest. Case studies will be presented illustrating the siRNA and miRNA research workflows provided by Applied Biosystems' Ambion tools. The siRNA workflow will highlight expression knockdown with Silencer® Pre-designed siRNAs, sample prep and downstream knockdown assays including TaqMan® Gene Expression Assays. The miRNA workflow will cover everything from miRNA extraction, global miRNA expression screens with both array and real-time PCR methods as well as functional assays.

Speaker - Larbi Gallagher, Applied Biosystems Asia Pacific

Larbi Gallagher is the Ambion Technical Product Specialist for the Asia-Pacific region. He started supporting siRNA and miRNA research in its relative youth almost five years ago in the technical services group at Ambion, gradually becoming a small RNA specialist. His work prior to Ambion focused on teaching molecular biology techniques in wet lab settings at the University of Florida. His research interests prior to Ambion, including his Bachelor's and Master's research, focused on small RNA molecules in plants. Previously located at the Ambion headquarters in Austin, TX in the USA, he has relocated to the Applied Biosystems office in Melbourne, Australia, from which he will host this lecture.
